Pediatrician and boxer Seo Ryeo-kyung takes on the world title for the first time

Professor Seo Ryeo-kyung (33), a pediatrician at Cheonan Hospital affiliated with Soonchunhyang University and the Korean professional boxing champion in the women's light flyweight division, will challenge for the world title.

Seo Ryeo-kyung will face Japan's Riyuna Yoshikawa (22) in the Women's International Boxing Association (WIBA) minimum weight (47.6 kg) world title match held at the Grand Ballroom of the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul on the 16th.

Riyuna is a former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific champion.


If Seo Ryeo-kyung becomes the WIBA minimum weight world champion, she plans to challenge for major titles such as the World Boxing Association (WBA)/WBO (World Boxing Organization) unified title or the International Boxing Federation (IBF) in Cheonan in June.


Seo Ryeo-kyung is a practicing doctor. Born in 1991, he started boxing at the recommendation of a fellow doctor in 2018 while working in the neonatal intensive care unit. After winning the third TKO (technical knockout) over Jeong Jae-young in December 2021, he took a hiatus due to being dispatched to Samsung Hospital in Seoul, but returned as a player when he returned to Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital in March of last year.


In July of last year, she defeated Lim Chan-mi in 38 seconds of the 8th round to become the Korean women's light flyweight champion. In December of the same year, she defeated Kula Thida Kuesanol (Thailand) by third round TKO, marking her fourth consecutive KO win.
