On a night shoot for Thai BL drama Not Me, actor-singer Atthaphan Phunsawat, aka Gun, finds himself shooting a scene set at a pro-marriage equality demonstration. Hundreds of members of Thailand's LGBT community encircle him as he clutches a large pride flag, which they are raising over their heads. Off Jumpol Adulkittiporn, his co-star, greets him beneath the rainbow and they lock eyes. In the middle of the chanting for equal marriage, Off reaches out and grabs hold of Gun's hand. They are transformed by their own sense of self-importance. Dramasq

At first, Off admits to Teen Vogue, "I couldn't visualize what the end scenario would look like," but he "always trusts in Nuchy's vision." Director Nuchy Anucha Boonyawatana, 劇迷 one of the few openly trans female directors in Thailand, is the subject of his conversation. An interesting nugget for Nuchy's supporters is that the rally's QR code leads to Thailand's petition for marriage equality when scanned via the screen. A part of what moved me was seeing real LGBTQ+ people onscreen who were fighting for their rights while standing under a real pride flag that had been used in a parade, says Off.

"No matter who you are, every sort of love is equal," Gun adds. Love between a man and a woman, a man and a woman, or any other kind of relationship — "I believe that everything is lovely as viewed from this scenario." It's a scenario that exemplifies a rising trend in Asian Boys' Love storytelling to include a broader range of perspectives on what it means to be gay and to raise the profile of the LGBTQIA+ community in popular culture. As a source of entertainment or escape for some, a representation for others, and a potential force for change, BL dramas have become an important part of the cultural landscape. 中國人線上看

To My Star, which is now running its second season and promises to give another heaping of the exceptional quality that won it a position on our Best BL Dramas of 2021 list, South Korean BLs have the same immersing flair as K-dramas that concentrate on straight couples. The production of the nation is rising. "Even if this sort of genre isn't very prevalent in Korea, right now we are doing BL dramas a little more than before, so I believe it's a positive thing," said Light on Me actor Lee Saeon to Teen Vogue last year. "I try to not think of it as 'a boy and a boy' love," Kang Yooseok, Saeon's co-star, remarked, "I was attempting to portray the reality that a person loves another person." 楓林網
