Basic Instructions for workers operating Around Pedestrians with High-Capacity Telehandlers

Telehandlers are helpful machines for heavy lifting task on construction sites. As an efficient machine, it reduces the time taken to complete a heavy work. But what happens when we get to know about the incident of different accidents that take place because of telehandlers hazards? A large number of pedestrians get seriously injured contributing to high death rate. Pedestrian safety is not something to overlook. With some right safety training and proper measures of awareness, the number of incidents that have taken place due to High-Capacity telehandlers can be reduce remarkably.

Type of Common Pedestrian Accidents:

  • Pedestrians getting too close to Telehandlers:

The common problem at any construction site is that pedestrians get too close to the telehandler. Any accident due to this can be dangerous.

  • Pedestrians Failing to Look Telehandlers in Operations:

There is a chance for the pedestrians not to notice telehandlers that are working on blind corners or intersections. Few telehandlers work very quietly that makes them hard to see. These types of situations are also dangerous for pedestrians.

Safety Measures to Increase Pedestrian Safety at Worksite:

Some safety measures can be applied to avoid the increase in pedestrian hazards:

Awareness Training for Pedestrians:

Providing pedestrians, the proper awareness training is not a time taking process. They need to be aware that high capacity telehandlers can appear around blind corners. With training, the pedestrian's awareness of when they need to stop, listen and look carefully walking around blinds corners.

Safety Equipment:

Pedestrians should always wear a highly visible vest or shirt for improving their visibility. Every telehandler operator should use all the safety measures and blow horns in case they spot any pedestrian near to their telehandler. Waring lights, travel alarms are necessary as well. The use of mirrors (convex) at the blind corners and intersections should be mandatory.

Complying Workplace Traffic Rules:

These rules are applied to the telehandler operator and pedestrians as well. Walking on the pedestrian lane is the first rule all should follow. Always avoid distractions while working in a telehandler traffic area. Walking around the blind corner, always wait and look for any traffic or safety rules.

High capacity telehandlers are handy but also dangerous. Constant awareness while walking around them is mandatory. Telehandler operators can do their job as safely as possible for the safety of pedestrians, they will be responsible. Awareness of your surroundings is obligatory if you are a pedestrian in your workplace. Follow workplace safety policies, recall them from time to time and avoid any hazards.
