Marvel Studios announces four new MCU shows for Disney+, including two animated series and solo projects featuring Agatha Harkness and Echo.

Marvel announces four new Marvel Cinematic Universe shows as part of Disney+ Day. Originally a bit of an experiment for Marvel, this year, Disney+ has become an exciting extension of the MCU movies. The streamer has given Marvel the ability to explore secondary characters from the films in more detail, while also introducing thrilling new heroes. Phase 4 kicked off with WandaVision, which earned Marvel its first-ever Emmy award. That series, along with subsequent shows like Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and What If...? are poised to have a big impact on the movie side of the MCU, while also being entertaining in their own right.

Marvel has one more Disney+ series on the way this year: Hawkeye, which is set to debut on November 24 and introduce audiences to Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop. There are several other Marvel Disney+ shows on the way in 2022, including Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. Disney shared more information about those series, as well as several others, during Disney+ Day.

The announcements from Marvel Studios included several new MCU shows. The first, Agatha: House of Harkness, will feature the return of Kathryn Hahn's immensely popular WandaVision villain, along with the head writer of that series Jac Schaefer. The second, Echo, will star Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, a character to be introduced in Hawkeye.

Marvel announced two animated MCU series as well. Spider-Man: Freshman Year "follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots." Meanwhile, following the success of What If...?'s zombie episode, Marvel Zombies "reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge." One other animated show, X-Men '97, was announced as well, though that's set outside of the MCU "in the iconic ‘90s timeline of the original series."

While some of these shows, including the Agatha Harkness and Echo spinoffs, were reported or at least rumored previously, this is the first official confirmation from Marvel on all five. The Agatha: House of Harkness series seems like the safest bet, as Hahn's character was inarguably a standout of WandaVision. Though audiences haven't met Maya Lopez yet, Marvel must be confident in her as a character after filming Hawkeye.

The Spider-Man and Marvel Zombies shows also build on previous success, with the MCU's version of Peter Parker a fan-favorite and many enjoying What If...?'s introduction to a zombie world. X-Men '97 may not be set in the MCU but will have the established audience of the original series, as well as several of Marvel's most iconic characters, which should help it be a success. All told, these new series seem like natural extensions of the MCU and the work Marvel has already done on Disney+.
