Acid dyes are classified into three groups, based on their leveling characteristics, the economy of the dyeing, and their fastness properties. The following three are the acid dye classes.

Neutral Acid Dyes

Acknowledged as supra milling or fast acid dyes, neutral acid dyes own good wet fastness properties. Some of these dyes are used as self-shades only. These dyes are applied to the fibre at a mild acidic or neutral pH.

Weak Acid Dyes

These dyes originate from the milling class of dyes. They possess excellent fastness properties however light fastness is moderate to poor.

Strong Acid Dyes

As the name suggests, these dyes are applied in the strongly acidic medium and are also known as the leveling dyes, however, they lack wet fastness properties. They tend to produce good combinational shades.
