Anime Review Fune wo Amu: Sailing Across the Ocean of Words

Words are the embodiment of one's feelings and thoughts. If humans are two different lands, words are the bridge that connects the two. Without the presence of words, civilization may not move forward and humans will find it difficult to understand each other.

Fune wo Amu (The Great Passage) tells about making dictionaries and how important dictionaries are in human life. The main character in this anime is Mitsuya Majime (voiced by Ryuhei Matsuda), a book publishing company salesman , who enjoys reading and interpreting words. Even though he works as a salesperson , Majime seems shy and rarely talks. One day, he meets Masashi Nishioka (Joe Odagiri) who works at the same place as Majime. Nishioka sees that Majime is not suitable to be a salesperson, and puts him in contact with the head of the dictionary making department which eventually becomes the place where Majime works.

Story Premise

Fune wo Amu has a unique story and is rarely found in other anime. Released in the fall of 2016 along with big titles like Bungou Stray Dogs sequels and 3-gatsu no Lion , this anime is pretty much buried under those titles. Talking about making a dictionary, of course this anime focuses on Majime's daily life with other characters in their daily work. Collecting words, researching their meanings, to designing what and for whom the dictionary was made. Although it may sound a little boring, the added drama and romance spices make this anime come alive. Having a simple story premise, the anime Fune wo Amupacked in a natural format, so that the audience will feel its closeness to the issues raised in this anime. Speaking of the audience, when looking from the premise the main target audience of the anime Fune wo Amu is people - adults and maybe teenagers who are in college or already working.

Character

Mitsuya Majime is described as an introverted character who is busy in his own world. He is more often silent and thinks about words and events that he encounters everyday. Even so, Majime didn't seem to have any trouble talking to people he knew. The interaction shown with his co-workers shows that Majime can communicate well. In the early episodes, Majime looks still stiff and a little surprised at people who talk a lot, how they are so free to express their feelings through the words spoken. One of the interesting things about this anime is the time skip in the middle of the series. Majime is said to have become the head of the dictionary making department, and interacts more with his juniors. Majime's character development is very visible here, from being more ambitious and shy at first, to becoming a leader who, although still looks quiet, looks more mature and wise.

The supporting characters of the Fune wo Amu anime are also well described. Masashi Nishioka, who is the main supporting character, is the opposite of Majime. Nishioka is a talkative, cheerful, and always forthright person. Even though he acts as Majime's partner, his knowledge of dictionaries is still very minimal, so his presence helps the audience to understand more about dictionaries and things around them. Other side characters such as heroine and Majime's companions don't get much character development, but they are good enough to make the storyline more interesting and play an important role in the formation of Majime's character as the main character.
