Hinamatsuri Anime Review: The Laughter and Tears of Haru Yakuza and the Supernatural Boy

When you hear the word Yakuza, you often think of illegal criminal activities such as extortion, gambling, and smuggling of goods. But is a yakuza's little heart really as cruel as his dirty work? So what about your daily life when you're not working?

The Hinamatsuri anime , adapted from a comic series by Masao Otake, tells the daily life of a yakuza named Yoshifumi Nitta (Yoshiki Nakajima) who is enjoying his success. Living in a luxury apartment and having a lot of money makes Nitta's daily life enjoyable and full of fun. One day, a strange object suddenly appears in Nitta's apartment, which turns out to be a human, namely Hina (Takako Tanaka). Moments later, it was discovered that Hina was no ordinary human. He has super powers that were first shown when breaking Nitta's collection of antiques with telekinesis . Since then, Nitta adopted Hina and lived together, hoping that Hina would not use her powers to interfere with Nitta's life.

The storyline of Hinamatsuri focuses on the daily life of Hina, who tries to live as a normal human being without using her superpowers. In every scene, Hina is always shown to be spoiled and always depends on Nitta when she wants to do something. Nitta, who, although often confused by Hina's behavior, still guides and helps Hina like her own child.

This anime carries the slice of life genre with comedy and supernatural wraps. It's hard not to laugh when you see Hina's strange behavior that always makes it difficult for Nitta. Nitta's anxiety is also very close to real life, for example, the moment when parents just have a child who is too busy to take care of. Comedy splashes also come from side characters, with light and not excessive jokes but very funny because of the right timing .

In addition to the thick comedy elements, it turns out that emotional moments are also included in this anime. The touching scene was shown several times, and with the back sound that supports it, it is not impossible that the audience will be made to cry. This kind of thing certainly strengthens the slice of life impression of the Hinamatsuri anime itself, which is actually rarely found in a comedy anime.

Although the background of Nitta's character is a yakuza, scenes that show his daily life doing Yakuza work are rarely shown. Several supporting characters were introduced to add to the Yakuza feel of a Nitta. However, seeing the storyline that focuses more on Hina's daily life and her relationship with Nitta, the Yakuza story is not really needed here. The super power of a Hina is only shown at the beginning, so the supernatural nuance is a little forgotten.

The thing that's a little annoying is at the end of the episode. Instead of ending the series with a touching ending , in the last episode, a new character was introduced which appeared as a prologue in the first episode. Not even shown the scene Nitta and Hina together in the last episode. This of course makes the audience a little confused and disappointed because of the anti-climax ending. However, on the other hand, with this ending, it is possible that the production team from Studio Feel is preparing a sequel, although until this review was published there was no clear news regarding the Hinamatsuri anime season 2.

As in comedy anime in general, Hinamatsuri doesn't really highlight the quality of the graphics and the depiction of the setting or the world. With many scenes containing many characters at once, Hinamatsuri's animation quality is more visible in the characters and their movements. The opening of Hinamatsuri is sung by Rie Murakawa with the title " Distance ", which is integrated with the theme of this anime. Meanwhile, the ending song is performed by the voice actor of Nitta's character, Yoshiki Nakajima with the title " Sake to Ikura to 893 to Musume " which represents Nitta's character itself. BGM and insert song) that is included makes the comedy feel even funnier, while strengthening the impression of a slice of life, especially when there are emotional moments in it.

Hinamatsuri anime is executed very well, with clear character traits, lots of funny and touching moments, making it an easy anime to enjoy. Although action scenes from the supernatural and the Yakuza world are rarely shown, Hinamatsuri is able to attract attention with a strong slice of life focus .
